Winter Session from today

Hyderabad: The stage is set for war of words between the TDP government and the opposition YRCP as the brief winter session begins on Thursday. While the TDP on Wednesday focussed its attention on the strategies it should adopt to counter the opposition attack, the YSRCP held its legislature party meeting and discussed ways to put the government on the mat.

  • YSRCP to take up farmers’ suicides, loan waiver etc
  • TDP to foil its bid, raise cases against Jagan & others
  • Naidu to make a statement on a key subject every day
  • TDP will try to convert it into a full-fledged debate

The YSRCP was in for a shock as 25 MLAs out of total strength of 67 skipped the meeting. Interestingly, Jagan’s maternal uncle P Ravindranath Reddy was among the absentees. Upset over this, Jagan made detailed enquiries with the party leaders and asked them to get in touch with those who did not come for the crucial meeting and find out the reasons for their absence.

The absence of a large number MLAs for the meeting has fuelled speculations that many of them are contemplating to join the TDP and the BJP. Giving credence to the speculations, Nandyal MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy said that the TDP tried to lure him into the ruling party and even offered ministry to his daughter Akhila Priya who was recently elected from Kurnool. He said as he turned down the offer, cases were foisted against him. He would move a privilege motion against the government for registering politically motivated cases in the ongoing session.

YSRCP leaders explained the absence of MLAs, saying they were busy with their personal work and local programmes and they would attend the House proceedings. The TDP which proposes to bring in five bills including the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) will try to keep the opposition busy with discussions on the bills.

As the YSRCP is planning to allege that farmers are committing suicides due to failure of the government in implementing the loan waiver scheme, Naidu is likely to make a detailed statement on the steps they have taken and would set the tone for a debate on the issue, taking the wind out of the opposition sails.
