Tomato farmers seek permanent solutions
Tomato farmers seek permanent solutions, He said that a study team under the leadership of the Joint Collector was set up to address the issues of tomato farmers and the team had visited Chikkaballapur area of Karnataka.
Madanapalle (Chittoor): “There is a dire need to find out a permanent solution to the problems being faced by the farmers who cultivate tomatoes,” said District Collector Siddharth Jain, while inaugurating the awareness programme on “Post-harvesting techniques and processing in tomato crops and Marketing” organised by the Department of Horticulture at CLRC Bhavan in Madanapalle on Thursday.
He said that a study team under the leadership of the Joint Collector was set up to address the issues of tomato farmers and the team had visited Chikkaballapur area of Karnataka. He urged the scientists, industrialists and farmers to set a clear direction through brain-storming sessions for the benefit of farmers and wanted the farmers to seek clarifications on their doubts by actively interacting with scientists and industrialists.
Stating that the Chief Minister had announced Rs 10 crore for the tomato crop during the ‘Janmabhoomi – Maa vooru’ programme, he advised the farmers to focus on market trends for tomato like people’s preference to sweet tomato or sour tomato, etc. and also practice the crop change and other management methods along with adopting modern technology and prevention of pests to enhance production.
He observed that there was a need to spread the wings across the globe by appreciating modern and advanced methods to preserve the crop and market successfully. He announced that the proceedings of the programme would be forwarded to government as an action plan.
Marking the occasion, the Collector had issued Rs. 2. 25 lakh as subsidy to Vinayaka Horticulture Society and released the booklet produced by the Horticulture Department.
Dr Girija Ganeshan and Dr T Hathya Singh, the chief scientists of vegetable division of National Horticulture Research Institute facilitated a power point presentation on modern farming techniques for tomato, post harvest management processing and prevention of pests.
Dr Tirupati Reddy has detailed the Trellis method and Srinijaguna, Manager Saffal Company delivered on marketing methods.
Madanapalle Sub-Collector RV Karnan, Horticulture Deputy Director Dharmaja and other officials, owners of nursery units and big number of farmers participated in the programme.
