Hyderabad: Aiming to utilise Godavari waters for upland areas, the State is contemplating to construct a lift irrigation project at the multi- purpose Polaravam project site, Irrigation Minister D Uma Maheswara Rao said on Friday. The lift irrigation project would be taken up as a supplementary project under the Polavaram project which has been given national project status and is funded by the Union government.

  • The project will link all rivers in State, says Devineni
  • Lift irrigation project at Polavaram site planned

The project would help to utilise 250 tmcft of water from Godavari. Rao said the new proposal would help provide irrigation water to 7 to 8 lakh acres of land in Krishna and the Godavari districts. It will irrigate the areas which are not covered under Polavaram in the coastal districts. The Minister said the Centre would be informed about the project before the works begin.

It is estimated that an amount of Rs 1000 crore would be required to complete the project. Rao said a water grid project, conceived to recharge tanks and ponds by shifting Krishna and Godavari river waters, is also under active consideration. The State Remote Sensing Agency has already taken up mapping of the four Rayalaseema districts, and also Srikakulam and Prakasam districts.

A plan of action would be prepared to utilise at least 500 tmcft of water which is being released into the sea. All the 35 river basins in AP would be covered under the grid. The government may take up the project next year.
