Bibliophiles in for 10-day extravaganza
Come January, bibliophiles in the city are in for a treat. For the 26th Book Exhibition would be held in the city from January 1 to 11. What began as The National Book Trust’s initiative to organise a book exhibition in 1989, eventually became an annual affair.
Come January, bibliophiles in the city are in for a treat. For the 26th Book Exhibition would be held in the city from January 1 to 11. What began as The National Book Trust’s initiative to organise a book exhibition in 1989, eventually became an annual affair. A team of enterprising book publishers and sellers formed the Vijayawada Book Festival Society the very next year.
A handful of these enthusiasts like ‘Navodaya’ Ramamohana Rao, I Akkeswara Rao, R Ramaswamy, ‘Navabharat’ Prakasara Rao, D Ashok Kumar, B Babjee, and others floated the society. Since then, the team has been working to bring the world’s best literature to the city each year.
Educational institutions and book lovers from the city and the neighbouring districts await the exhibition with great zeal. The interesting aspect of the exhibition is a ‘Walk for Books’ wherein some eminent writers or leaders lead a walk of book lovers from Lenin Centre in the city to the exhibition venue at Swaraj Maidan. The walk draws attention of many people and book lovers wait for this day to make their love for literature public..
The society has introduced several competitions for students. They have planned book releases by different authors and literary meets on the main dais to promote reading and writing. Popular writers from other Indian languages have been invited for interactions with readers. In addition to these, the society would be celebrating the birth centenaries of writers like Chaganti Somayajulu (ChaasO), Palagummi Padma Raju and Vidwan Viswam.

This year, the new team headed by president S Rama Rao, vice-president G Lakshmi, secretary S Venkatanarayana, joint-secretary VL Narasa Reddy and treasurer K Ravi, have planned the book exhibition with more than 250 book sellers and publishers will be displaying their treasure of books.
