Edn reforms needed in developing countries
The developing countries like India must bring the reforms in the present education system to enhance the human resource capabilities with combined effort is highly needed, said GITAM President and ex Parliamentarian Dr MVVS Murhti here on Friday.
Visakhapatnam: The developing countries like India must bring the reforms in the present education system to enhance the human resource capabilities with combined effort is highly needed, said GITAM President and ex Parliamentarian Dr MVVS Murhti here on Friday. He inaugurated the International Conference “Rejuvenating Universities in Developing Countries: Challenges and Prospects” Jointly organised by GITAM University and The University of Papua New Gunea at GITAM Institute of Management.
Dr Murthi observed that the developing nations which are financially poor must adopt the system of public – private partnerships to strengthen the education system without losing their cultural identities. He said that quality teaching, research capabilities, financial backgrounds are playing key role in higher education. He pointed that the Indian government should give equal importance to private universities to maintain competition in higher education. He appreciated the Andhra Pradesh government efforts for giving equal importance to ICT and Agricultural sectors.
GITAM University Chancellor Prof K Ramakrishna Rao said that higher education has witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of universities and colleges since independence. The number of universities has increased from 20 in 1950 to 677 in 2014 particularly 45 central universities, 318 state universities, 185 state private universities, 129 deemed-to-be universities, 51 institutions of national importance, he briefed.
He mentioned that as per the recent estimates by 2024 48 million people would be seeking post-graduates admissions in India whereas the corresponding numbers would be 37 million in China and 22 million in the US. He said that the government should give equal importance to private universities and treat all the state funded universities in the state as a single State University System (SUS) with statutory independence and functional autonomy granted to each of the constituent units.
The University of Papua New Guinea Chancellor Prof Stephen Pokawin mentioned that the universities in developing in countries must establish linkages for better performance. He said that his university is planning to enter in to era to train the own countrymen particularly rural people.
