Elephant calf rescued in Assam, reunited with herd

Nagaon: An international wildlife NGO in Assam has rescued an elephant calf and reunited it with its herd, an NGO member said Wednesday.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare-Wildlife Trust of India (IFAW-WTI) recently rescued the one-and-half-year-old elephant calf.

The elephant was found in Borbhogia village in Nagaon district.

The Mobile Veterinary Service (MVS) team of the IFAW-WTI received information that an elephant calf was found surrounded by dogs in a swampy wetland in the area.

The MVS rushed to the spot and rescued the elephant calf with support from the state forest department. The calf was taken to a safer place at the Jakhalabonda forest for observation.

"The calf was healthy with no external injury. We planned a reunion attempt when the herd was expected to pass through the nearby corridor," said Biswajit Boruah, who led the MVS team.

"We took the calf to the nearby elephant corridor in Kellyden tea estate. The calf started making loud noises on seeing the elephant herd. The herd then slowly disappeared into the dense forest accompanied by the calf," he said.
