RSS, BJP leaders agree for campaign on conversion law
New Delhi: With the saffron brigade hardening its stand on ‘Ghar Vapsi’ aimed at reconversions, the BJP-led NDA government is feeling the heat from the opposition in Parliament where the key reform legislations like the Insurance and coal bills are pending for approval.
Concerned over the imbroglio in Parliament, the top leaders of BJP and RSS met on Monday to discuss the escalating controversy over forced conversions by some Sangh Parivar outfits. The deliberations convened over dinner at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's residence to ensure better coordination with the government was attended among others by BJP President Amit Shah and RSS second-in-command Bhayyaji Joshi besides Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.
The Winter session of Parliament ends on Tuesday. An insider privy to the talks said the leaders discussed the current political situation and issues of governance at a time when the opposition has attacked the government and BJP over forced conversions across the country.
Party leaders were tight-lipped about discussions that took place while BJP sources said it was a periodic review meeting where leaders of BJP, its ideological fountainhead RSS and government sit together to discuss the political situation to ensure smooth coordination with the party.
At the meeting, the RSS and the BJP were reported to have stressed on the need for a campaign for an anti-conversion law. The Government and the BJP have expressed their readiness to have such a law but put the onus on the opposition to give its support for this measure.
Among others present at the meeting included BJP general secretaries Ram Lal and Ram Madhav, both of whom have been closely associated with the RSS and senior Sangh leader Bajrang Lal Gupta. Meanwhile, the CPI on Monday came down heavily on the Sangh Parivar’s agenda. Terming RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat's remarks that conversions will continue to take place in the country as "reckless", CPI said that RSS and its organizations should stop all attacks against the minorities in the interest of unity and integrity of India.
"The Central Secretariat of the CPI expresses its serious concern at the statement of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that 'Ghar Vapsi' or conversions will take place as all the Muslims and Christians in India were converted from Hinduism. This is a reckless statement," the party said in a statement.
