Mercedes-Benz reveals GLE Coupe
After five years and just after revealing its second-generation model, BMW finally has a rival to its all-conquering X6 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).
After five years and just after revealing its second-generation model, BMW finally has a rival to its all-conquering X6 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). Called the GLE Coupe, it's a whole bunch of firsts for Mercedes-Benz - a Sports Utility Coupe, the first car with the AMG Sports badge and a 9-speed automatic gearbox. But that's just one part of the story.
The GLE has been under development for the last three-years or more. Based on the ML-platform, the GLE features 4Matic as standard on all variants and is, for the moment, offered with a 3.0-litre, 258 hp diesel motor option called the GLE 350d 4Matic or a new, AMG Sports tuned 367 hp V6 Biturbo petrol called the GLE 450 AMG. The AMG Sports model is go-between the regular Mercs and the full-blown AMGs, sort of like the S-models from Audi and the BMW M Sport models.
New to the GLE is also the 9-speed automatic gearbox called the 9-GTronic with quick and smooth shifting on offer, claims Mercedes-Benz. The 40:60 all-wheel drive split, combined with the Dynamic Select modes, lends the car sporty handling, what Merc calls “longitudinal agility and lateral dynamics”. Yeah well, whatever!
There's also an active curve system that activates the roll bars front and rear, when Sport or Sport+ is selected on the Dynamic Select mode. Wheel sizes include 20-inch as standard on the 350 or optional 21-inchers, with the 450 getting 21-inch wheels as standard and 22-inch numbers as an option.
The GLE will go on sale in most major markets by early next-year and we expect an Indian debut to take place sometime by mid to late-2015. You could expect a price tag upwards of Rs 90 lakh, ex-showroom for the diesel, with the petrol at an even higher Rs 1 crore plus at current exchange rate, taxation and duty structure.
