Visakhapatnam: New technology would be used to streamline the city traffic and provide better security to women, Director-General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh JV Ramudu has said. Talking to reporters after a review meeting with senior police officials here on Monday, the DGP said Vizag has been growing by leaps and bounds and regulation of traffic would be a major issue in future.

“The police personnel have to use technology to deal with the traffic menace and give better security for women in the city,” Mr Ramudu said. The DGP said they would rope in top IT companies and best colleges in the city to study and design technology to address the traffic problem and also for security of women. Perhaps, a pilot project would be launched in a couple of months, he said.

Accepting the fact that there was acute shortage of manpower, the DGP said there was a need to use more technology to bridge the gap between the required strength and existing manpower. “A proposal has been sent to the government for recruitment of about 8,000 Constables,” he added.

Regarding the increase in white collar crime, Mr Ramudu said the Police Department sent a proposal to the government for drafting a new law for white collar crimes, which could bring in stringent laws to curb them. On setting up new training centres, the DGP said a proposal was sent to the government to set up own training centres for Octopus and Greyhounds for Andhra Pradesh.

“The department has identified three places in the State, including one in Visakhapatnam, for the setting up of separate centre for Octopus and Greyhounds and approval is pending,” Mr Ramudu said. The DGP said that a centre for Rapid Action Force (RAF) would be set up on the outskirts of the city near Lankelapalem but denied that there was any threat from international terror groups.
