Hyderabad: Is the BJP preparing a ground for confrontation with its ally the TDP? If the developments in Godavari districts are any indication, it appears that the BJP is slowly laying the road for a direct confrontation as part of its strategy to strengthen the party in the state.

The local leadership of the BJP has convened an all-party meeting on Monday to discuss the government’s decision to lift 80 TMCs of Godavari River water to Krishna delta. Interestingly, the BJP leaders have invited the Congress and YSRCP for the meeting but did not send any invitation to the TDP. The state-level leaders like AP BJP president K Haribabu and others are maintaining silence over the development.

The local unit of the BJP is also miffed over according administrative sanction of Rs 1,300 crore, for diversion of water from river Godavari to river Krishna, through Polavaram Right Main Canal, for domestic and industrial use.

The government said that as the completion of Polavaram project head works will take four years for completion, thus, it is proposed to divert the waters of Godavari to Krishna river, by lift through thirty vertical turbine pumps, each of which having 280 cusecs discharging capacity. The proposed pumping at Pattiseema into Indira Sagar Right Main Canal (ISRMC) would be a part of the Polavaram project, and the present proposal was to achieve early benefits and is well within the frame work of Krishna and Godavari Tribunal Awards. However, both the Opposition Congress, YSRCP, Left parties and the BJP have expressed their reservations on the proposal, alleging it would deprive the irrigation and drinking water needs of Godavari districts.

Speaking to The Hans India, the YSRCP MLA from the district Jyothula Nehru said the proposal had come against the back drop of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha objecting to the Polavaram project, and the Apex Court suggesting to find out whether there were any other alternatives.

Refuting the allegations, TDP senior leader and MLA Gorantla Buchaiah Chowdary said the proposal was only a temporary measure, and the government had made it clear in its notification. The TDP leader said that the party leadership has directed them not to bother about the all party meeting but to go to the people and explain the reason behind the government’s decision and re-assure them that their interests would be protected.
