Hyderabad: The city police rescued nearly 220 child labourers, including three girls, from Old City during a massive cordon and search operation conducted by south zone police during the early hours of Saturday. According to officials, many of the rescued children were working illegally at the bangle manufacturing units in Talab Katta area.

Police registered 14 cases against bangle manufacturing owners under Section 370 of IPC and Section 26 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. “A team of 15 to 20 poor children were allocated a small narrow room, which was full of noxious chemical contamination,” said V Satyanarayana, DCP South Zone.

It was observed that most of the children were suffering from various chronic skin and lung-related ailments. Moreover, CCTV cameras were installed to monitor these children. The police rounded up 15 middlemen and business owners including Yaseen Pehelwan, who engaged boys from Bihar on meagre salary. They reportedly admitted to have brought the minors from Gaya, Jahanabad, Nalanda and Nawada of Bihar. “These children were brought to the city after giving an advance between Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000,” said DCP.

The police also arrested three rowdy sheeters and seized swords and other arms from their houses. Some 3,000 police personnel including Task Force and Special Teams from 17 police stations were involved in the operation, which lasted for about six hours. DCP said the operation was carried out to nab habitual criminals ahead of Republic Day. The rescued children were handed over to department of Women and Child Welfare.
