Advani, Amitabh figure in Padma Vibhushan list

Hyderabad: The two Telugu-speaking States, AP and Telangana, share Padma Awards equally – three each. Padma Awards, the prestigious civilian awards of the country, are conferred on six prominent personalities from the two States. Three from Telangana Dr A Manjula, a leading laparoscopic surgeon, and Mithali Raj and P V Sindhu both sportspersons while popular character actor Kota Srinivasa Rao, badminton player Syed Mohammed Arif and social worker G Muniratnam from AP were conferred Padma Sri.

Noted oncologist Dr Nori Dattatreyudu of Andhra Pradesh selected for Padma Shri in NRI category.

Advani, Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar and Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal were chosen for Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour, as government gave a saffron touch honouring eminent people of various fields in the list of Padma awardees.

This list comprises nine Padma Vibhushan, 20 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri awardees. 17 of them were women and equal number were in the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and four posthumous awardees.

Dr Anagani Manjula is one among the few leading laparoscopic surgeons in India. She is honorary Associate Professor with NTR Health University of Health Sciences (Vijayawada) and a visiting laparoscopic surgeon with NMC Speciality hospitals, Dubai. She did her MD in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad.

Kota Srinivasa Rao acted in more than 600 films, including Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam during his 35 year film career.


He made his debut with Pranam Khareedu Telugu film in 1978. He received wide critical acclaim for diverse roles in Telugu films such as Attarintiki Daredi, Dookudu, Rakta Charitra, Tagore, Athadu, Ganesh and Anaganga oka roju. In his brief political stint, Srinivasa Rao was elected as BJP MLA from Vijayawada (East) Assembly constituency in 1999 election.
