AP to beef up power sector
In order to meet the target set by the government to reduce transmission and distribution (T&D) losses to single digit (9 per cent) in future, Andhra Pradesh power utilities have decided to adopt latest technologies available at global level and have determined to achieve Number 1 position in the country in the area of power development as well as reducing losses, according to K Vijayanand, Chairman and Managing Director, AP Transco.

Addressing employees of AP Transco and AP Genco on the occasion of 66 Republic Day, Vijayanand said that as part of the programme of optimising thermal power generation to meet the requirements of the people, the AP Genco is contemplating to declare Commercial Operation Date (COD) of two units of Krishnapatnam Thermal Power Station (KTPS - 2 X 800 MW) by March 2015.
Enthused with the achievement of around 800 MW wind power so far for the first time, the power utilities are going to take up major initiatives for further achieving the additional capacity of wind and solar power substantially. The Centre has identified Andhra Pradesh as one of the best destinations for promotion of solar power.
In a significant development, the Central government has agreed in principle to release the amount of Rs 320 crore for issuing 2.8 lakhs new electrical connections towards rural electrification in the State. By completing this programme, AP which has already achieved 100 per cent village electrification, will be able to achieve 100 per cent electrification even in remote areas and habitations. He reiterated the significance of consumer services in a sector like power and said consumer satisfaction would be given top most priority.
