Nellore: The women in Nellore district have once again risen in revolt against unauthorised liquor shops, which are called in local parlance as “belt shops.” The women in 10 villages under Venakatachalam mandal on Monday attacked the belt shops. They barged into the liquor shops and threw out liquor bottles outside.

After breaking the bottles into pieces, they set fire to the liquor. The women said the belt shops were doing brisk business for long. The authorities had turned a blind eye to liquor merchants setting up unauthorised shops in villages. It may be recalled that the campaign led by women in the Nellore district during 1992-93 led to imposition of total prohibition in the State after N T Rama Rao returned to power in 1994. The prohibition was lifted after N Chandrababu Naidu replaced NTR in 1995.
