Johannesburg: South Africa cricket team captain AB de Villiers has branded the squad's loss against the West Indies in the fourth ODI of the five-match series at Port Elizabeth as a 'painful affair'.

After West Indies chased down the victory target of 263 with one wicket and nine balls to spare, De Villiers said that the South Africans squad was wide awake the whole way through there, claiming that they weren't complacent or anything like that.

It was South Africa's first defeat in the series. Their effort with the ball, defending their total, started as planned as they had the tourists reduced to 73 for five in the 21st over, Sport24 reported.

However, a 93-run stand for the sixth wicket between Darren Sammy (51) and Marlon Samuels (68) kept West Indies on track in their chase.

De Villiers claimed that after every wicket they were talking about staying humble, keep working hard, and running balls down to the boundary. He added that there is no way that it was a wake-up call.

The skipper insisted that it came down to a little bit of pressure at the end there and his side lost. He added that it's a painful affair but they move on and would try to finish on a high at Centurion.

South Africa will head to the Highveld leading the series 3-1, with the final match to be played on Wednesday, the report added.
