As many as 38 passengers travelling by a hi-tech bus belonging to Parveen Travels of Chennai had a miraculous escape when it caught fire on NH 5 at Chagallu village in Ulavapadu mandal at around 2 am on Wednesday.

Ongole (Prakasam): As many as 38 passengers travelling by a hi-tech bus belonging to Parveen Travels of Chennai had a miraculous escape when it caught fire on NH 5 at Chagallu village in Ulavapadu mandal at around 2 am on Wednesday. The bus bearing No TN21 AK8307 was on its way to Chennai from Hyderabad when the mishap occurred. The bus was completely gutted in the incident.

Kandukuru Circle Inspector M Laxman said the bus driver stopped the vehicle soon after noticing smoke emanating from it and alerted passengers. All the passengers alighted from the bus immediately. All their personal belongings and luggage were completely destroyed in the fire. On receiving the news, the police rushed to the spot and sent the passengers to their destinations in another private bus. Forensic team from Guntur and Clues team from Ongole were pressed into service to find out the reason for the fire. Ongole RTO D Venkateswara Rao also visited the spot. A case was registered.

Transport Minister S Raghava Rao appointed Nellore Deputy Transport Commissioner N Sivaram Prasad as enquiry officer on Chagallu Hitech bus fire mishap. The Minister said that as per preliminary estimates, Rs 10 lakh worth gold ornaments, laptaps and other items were destroyed in the mishap. He assured to the victims that he would speak to the owner of the private travels and provide them justice.

Two die as tanker hits tipper
The driver and cleaner of an empty oil tanker died when it rammed a stationary tipper on NH 5 at around 4 am on Wednesday. The mishap occurred while it was going to Nellore from Guntur. Yanibasha (25), cleaner of the ill-fated tanker, died on the spot in the incident. He hailed from Chilakaluripet in Guntur district. Driver Mastan Vali (45) of Chilakaluripet succumbed to injuries while being shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ongole. J Panguluru police registered a case.
