The Association of Senior Citizens of Hyderabad (ASCH) celebrated their 16th Foundation Day on Tuesday. Various programmes were held at Lions Bhavan, Secunderabad, to mark the occasion. GV Giri, president, Hyderabad Art Society, and Dr TV Rao, district governor, Lions Club, inaugurated an art exhibition that showcased 26 paintings by 13 senior citizens. The paintings were judged by Giri, who is famous for sculpting the statutes lining Tank Bund. Prizes were distributed to the four winners -- Parvati Rao, IM Bhalla, Bhushan and Krishnamurthy.

A handicrafts exhibition had innumerable pieces of crochet and hand embroidery, stone carvings, etching work, dolls, cushions, wallets, festive decoration items like thoranam, lamps made out of cake base, terracotta lamps, bead work, etc. Seven senior women organised the expo.

RN Mital, a recipient of several awards from the Ministry of Social Justice and HelpAge India, spoke of advocacy efforts by the association. He gave a brief account of the association and read out names of members who were recognised by the government and other agencies.

Dr TV Rao, the chief guest, explained on why it was necessary to inculcate service orientation among youth. He narrated how the elderly were being abused and stressed the role of senior citizens’ associations (SCAs) in rendering service in this area. Skits, dances, comedy and mimicry impressed the audience. Nonagenarian BG Krishnamurthy was felicitated on the occasion.
