Swine flu hits docs hard
Twelve junior doctors of Osmania General Hospital, who have contracted swine flu, were taken off their duties on Thursday. The junior doctors were exempted from the duties and were asked to undergo treatment. This had further given credence to the allegations that the junior doctors on duty at Osmania Hospital were not supplied with N-90 facemasks that are effective in preventing the spread of H1N1 virus.

Hyderabad: Twelve junior doctors of Osmania General Hospital, who have contracted swine flu, were taken off their duties on Thursday. The junior doctors were exempted from the duties and were asked to undergo treatment. This had further given credence to the allegations that the junior doctors on duty at Osmania Hospital were not supplied with N-90 facemasks that are effective in preventing the spread of H1N1 virus.
Meanwhile, two more died of swine flu at Gandhi Hospital here on Thursday. One was a 35-year-old resident of Madhapur and another was a 58-year-old woman hailing from Nizamabad. Of the 42 swine flu patients being treated at Gandhi Hospital, 10 are children. Twelve swine flu patients are being treated at Osmania General Hospital.
State Health, Medical & Family Welfare Secretary Suresh Chanda said in a statement that swine flu had claimed 21 lives so far this year. He said, “Between January 1 and 28, a total of 1398 samples were tested and 509 samples tested positive. The Health ministry claimed that the “virus has weakened and its severity has come down, as seen from the statistics from 2009 onwards.”
He further claimed that the percentage of number of deaths to total number of positive cases (fatality rate) is lesser in the current year. The fatality rates between 2009 and 2014, ranged between 7 per cent and 10 per cent. However, in the current year, the fatality rate was only 4 per cent until January 27, he added.
Meanwhile, homeopathy doctors have advised citizens to take homeo medicine as a preventive measure under the guidance of a homeopathy doctor. Medicines are available free of cost at Government Homeo Hospital, Ramanthapur and at all AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathy) dispensaries.
