The biggest technological challenge that the country faces is in its implementation part, considering there is not much of a qualitative difference between what is happening in India and the trends prevailing abroad. As far as technology and innovation are concerned, we are not left behind, avers Prof. Shabbir Merchant from IIT Bombay.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function in the city, Prof Merchant said “we have to move away from this western influenced research in order to achieve inter-disciplinary work as an integral part of the routine.” Citing an instance, he says, Pranav Mistry, the man behind Samsung’s Galaxy Gear and an IIT Bombay alumnus, had achieved global fame with his milestone because he was endowed with the determination, interdisciplinary practice and hard work, which were blended to appropriate levels.

In today’s world where competitive edge makes all the difference, he exclaims “we are capable of doing anything. Since India is a big country, implementation remains the biggest impediment,” points out the man of proven eminence. It will take some time. People have to be more disciplined, they have to be told how to use things, he quips while ruing the general perception that only IITians can make a difference to the established structure.

“People from all strata are coming to IITs. But a closer study will reveal that even those not armed with an IIT certification are also working wonders,” he points out. ‘Dedication, diligence and desire to achieve something have to be imbibed in one’s mindset. If that is there, success will follow. Being in IIT might perhaps give you an early career start.’

He urges students to experiment, become entrepreneurs and innovators for carrying out developmental work. It’s easy to look at a product in the market, but developing that product and bringing it to the market is not an easy job, he says, while underscoring that it was achievable.
