Vijayawada: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member B V Raghavulu here on Friday demanded the State government to take over all unauthorised buildings that came up on the Krishna riverbed. He advised the State government to make use of them to house offices like the Chief Minister’s camp office, Raj Bhavan, High Court and Secretariat.
Raghavulu along with Vijayawada city party unit secretary Ch Babu Rao and other leaders, hired a State Tourism boat and moved around 15 km in the river and examined the massive construction that came up on the riverbed over the years. He pointed out the buildings were constructed in violation of the River Conservation Act of 1884 and so they could be confiscated.
The government can make use of the buildings for capital requirement without snatching away the fertile farmlands in the area, Raghavulu said. He advised the State government to stop further constructions on the riverbed. He reminded the State government that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) proposed to construct its party office on the riverbed.
The Congress too had threatened to construct its office if the government failed to stop the BJP office from constructing its office on the riverbed. If the government failed in its duty to ensure that the BJP called off its move to build its party office, it would trigger encroachment of the riverbed, he felt.
Raghavulu vowed to lead the farmers in capital region to defy the ban on cultivation imposed by the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). Babu Rao accused the State government of being “pro-rich and pro-corporate.” He said the government was trying to protect the rich and powerful and targeted the farmers.
