Kakinada: The State government has taken steps to strengthen the local bodies by allocating more funds to help them come out of financial crunch. All the 13,000 panchayats will be provided with funds on yearly basis. Each panchayat will receive funds depending on its population. The government will provide funds at the rate of Rs 400 per head, according to Panchayat Raj Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu on Friday.

He was speaking at a meeting after inaugurating the renovated camp office for Zilla Parishad Chairman here. The Minister said the government had earlier proposed to allocate Rs 10 lakh to each panchayat on yearly basis. But after going through the population details, the government had decided to adopt model for allocation of funds basing on population in each panchayat.

While the State government would provide 50 per cent of the funds, the panchayat would utilise funds earmarked for MGNREGS to provide rural employment, he said. Ayyanna Patrudu warned the officials against sanctioning layouts on agriculture lands indiscriminately.
