SRM University, Chennai won the first prize at the fourth national student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, an engineering competition conducted by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

SRM University, Chennai won the first prize at the fourth national student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, an engineering competition conducted by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The main focus of this competition is to involve students in the new frontiers areas of ocean technology and kindle their innovative thinking in this unexplored area of ocean environment and observation.

The competition required engineering students to visualise and design an autonomous underwater vehicle. The event was jointly organised by IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society and Ocean Society of India. Out of 27 teams registered, 14 teams submitted their Preliminary Design Reports (PDR).

These teams submitted detailed conceptual design report and on the basis of oral presentation held at NIOT on November 13, 2014. Around 10 teams were shortlisted. Finally, six teams prepared their AUV and participated in the competition. After the successful demonstration to the national committee on January 24 at IIT Madras Swimming Pool, the committee selected the team of students from SRM University, Chennai as the winner of the competition. NIOT will sponsor the winning team to participate in the International Competition to be held at San Diego, USA during July.
