The mobile vendors at Jagadish Market, Abids, were in for a rude awakening on Thursday morning when the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities barged into the market premises and sealed near about 350 shops, stating nonpayment of property tax as reason.

“The GHMC authorities started sealing the shops at five in the morning. It went on till 8 am. It was shocking news to every shopkeeper. They came running to their shops to stop the menace. But by that time everything was over,” said Md Maisuddin, president, Jagadish Market Mobile Merchants Association (JMMMA).

Jagadish Market back to business

He added, “They did not have any warrant. And notices weren’t served. There may be few stray cases, where the shopkeeper might not have paid the tax in spite of serving the notices. For that why must all the 350 shopkeepers be punished? Each shop incurs a loss of at least Rs 3,000 per day.

The officials are not allowing us to open the shop so that we can show them the tax receipts.” Things returned to normalcy on Friday and business ran on as usual. However, the merchants association is now approaching the High Court to file a civil, criminal and defamation case against the GHMC for the wrongful sealing of the shops.
