Job satisfaction in any field is obtained only if professional as well as monetary contentment is achieved. For a fresher this becomes a little difficult and can come only with time and thorough experience. Especially in the legal world respect, honor, prestige and money come after a long period of experience.

After an LLB degree one has to work with patience and dedication for around 5 years, under a senior advocate until reputation is established. However during this process one can gains a lot of domain knowledge and understands the basics of Law practice. This can happen only if you join a Law firm after your LLB. On the other hand if you graduate from a renowned law school like National Law School or NALSAR you have the chances of being absorbed by companies during the campus recruitment itself, which could give you a good package of salary initially itself.

LPO/Legal process outsourcing is basically project oriented wherein the complex legal work of the clients is standardised, processed and assigned a structure. This is to increase profits and reduce the risk factors. The solutions offered to the client are highly technology oriented and hence increase efficiency and scalability. LPO vendors, Law firms and corporate work in coordination and work across different lines of business for customers across different parts of the world. They provide support and services in varied fields, such as:

  • Administrative work like contract abstraction, patent proof reading and litigation coding)
  • Complex services, such as contract negotiations, obligation management, patent drafting etc
  • Nontraditional services such as, litigation financing, loan processing , etc

Thereby, a legal outsourcing company gives a global exposure and helps in learning international best practices.

If you are a single point of contact for the client, you even get a chance of to be a part of the employee exchange program.

It has recorded a 50 per cent growth and as per the US based Forester Research, the annual value of global legal outsourcing by 2015 is expected to rise to $4billion and 79,000 jobs to be created.

Companies that hire massively include Inventurus, Pangea 3, Interecon, Mindcrest, etc and presently there are around 100 firms in India. The deserving get a chance to work for fortune 500 companies, understanding their requirements, working with their GCs office and this becomes a good learning experience for them.

As most of the work is outsourced by US and UK law firms, it is essential that you are familiar with their laws and to fulfill this need law schools such as Symbiosis, Indian Law society etc are collaborating with US law schools to teach their law to our students.

Regarding the pay package, recruits from the best schools can expect a package of 7-12 lakhs and the next level of them can expect somewhere around 4-7 lakhs and the others 2-4lakhs per annum. The experienced lawyers depending on the number of years they worked, their specialisation, communication power, productivity etc can expect a compensation of approximately 7-20lakhs.

In the long term, greater partnerships/tie-ups between industry and universities will improve both the quality and quantity of the labor pool and change the perception that students have towards the LPO industry. Now, choosing between the two, i.e. law firm VS LPO is a personal choice.

LPO offers a decent work time and low work pressure but then it has its own cons like if you suddenly wish to move on to a Law firm it might become difficult whereas the vice versa is possible. As each line has its flip side, which option to choose ultimately boils down to your aptitude and attitude. All the best!!
