One Billion Rising, a campaign to stop violence against women, was started by American playwright and activist Eve Ensler in 2012. It soon became a sensation in more than 200 countries. Various programmes were conducted as part of the campaign at Sundarayya Kala Bhavan, Baghlingampally, on Thursday.

Colourful rallies and cultural programmes were conducted and saw participation from many NGOs and individuals. Poetry was recited at the event. A dance performance by ADP employees enthralled the audience. A documentary on saving the girl child was screened by Action Aid, an NGO.

“The main aim of showing the documentary was to bring awareness among the people about the declining female population. As if now there are only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys in Hyderabad. The State government must constitute a committee comprising of professionals from different sectors to keep a check,” said says Kalpana of Action Aid. K Satyavati of Bhoomika, the organisation which conducted the event, spoke against child abuse and on the importance of women empowerment. She encouraged people to come forward and support the cause.
