Godavarikhani: Mining has always been a very tough job. Miners go home filthy after working in a dusty pit. Their clothes with thick coal dust cannot be used for the next day work. Since miners regularly stay for nearly four to six hours inside the mines, they get exposed to a lot of dust and coal. They also sweat profusely. The miners at Singareni Collieries are facing problems with no proper facilities for bathing at the mines.

They are taking bath with cool water inside the mines. Some others after coming out of mines take bath near the taps. However, with the SCCL Board of Directors recently taking a decision to construct the 'Pithead Bath Complexes' at mines at the beginning of the financial year 2015-16, at a cost of Rs 15 lakh each, the miners and other employees could step onto the bus or vehicle home clean. They will no longer suffer the embarrassment of going home in dirty clothes.

Pithead baths are a physical symbol of the changes that are taking place in coal mining. They have a great impact on the lives of miners and their families. Soon the miners after completing their work, would hang their clothes in the locker, take a towel, go and have a shower, and put on the clean clothes before going home.

In a meeting held recently, the SCCL management has taken a decision to construct Pithead baths. They also invited the Architectural Consultancy representatives to show various designs. The representatives showed eight different models of Pithead baths. The management is going to select one of the eight designs to build ‘Pithead bath complexes’ at mines in the beginning of the financial year 2015-16.
