Hyderabad: A history of sorts was created at Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad, on Saturday when a ‘Live Heart’ from Bengaluru was airlifted and a unique heart transplant operation was performed on 46-year-old Padma, a resident of Kothagudem in Khammam district.
She has been moved to the ICU and kept under observation. Padma, a government school teacher, is a known case of hypertension, diabetes and hypothyroidism. She was diagnosed with cardiac ailment one-and-a-half years ago. She was initially under the care of Dr Ramchandra V S of Sri Sri Holistic Hospital, Nizampet, Kukatpally.
Subsequently, she was referred to Dr A G K Gokhale, chief heart transplant surgeon, with specialisation in minimal access cardiac surgery at Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad, in September 2014. She was reviewed and advised heart transplantation. Padma got registered with Jeevandhaan, a government organisation, about one-and-a- half months ago and continued to stay near the hospital for the past three months awaiting an appropriate donor heart for transplantation.
At about 3.30 am on Saturday, Jeevandhaan intimated Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad, about a prospective organ donor at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. Pandit Shivrai Baje, a 30-year-old man, was declared brain dead after a road accident on February 26. Upon receipt of the information, Yashoda Hospital activated its machinery and contacted its counterparts in Victoria Hospital immediately for harvesting and airlifting the ‘Live Heart’ to Hyderabad to be transplanted to Padma. A private chartered flight was engaged in Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, I G Murthy of Airports Authority of India and the Commissioners of Police of both Bengaluru and Hyderabad were informed about the need for swift airlifting and transportation of the ‘Live Heart’ to Yashoda Hospital. At about 7 am, a team of six personnel headed by Dr Gokhale left for Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru, for harvesting the vital organ.
Then it was transported without any traffic hassles in about 11 minutes from Victoria Hospital to HAL Airport, Bengaluru, a stretch of 15 km. The special chartered flight landed in Hyderabad in about an hour’s time at about 1:13pm and subsequently the heart was transported from Begumpet airport to Yashoda Hospital in 2 minutes 45 seconds.
All this was possible because of the efficient traffic management by the traffic police of both the cities who created a “green channel” for swift movement of ambulance. It took about 1 hour 30 minutes for the transportation of the ‘Live Heart’ from Victoria Hospital , Bengaluru to Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad. Immediately the transplantation for Padma got under way by a team of 15 medical personnel headed by Dr Gokhale.
