On Wednesday, with the government receiving bids worth about 617 billion rupees ($9.9 billion), it was a great start for India's latest auction of radio wave frequencies for telecoms networks. In an auction that the government considers $13.3 billion could be raised, market leaders Vodafone Group Plc and Bharti Airtel’s local unit are among eight companies bidding to win the 20-year allocations in four different spectrum bands.

On Day one, Department of Telecommunications has released the data after six rounds of bidding, the auction showed high interest in the premium 900 megahertz band that is currently used for voice services, high-speed 3G data can be carried, has more reach than the higher-frequency, 2100 MHz and higher-capacity 1800 bands on offer.

Based on the bidding intensity, the auction could last for days or even weeks and until the auction is over, the government will not disclose company-specific bids.
