A complicated cardiac surgery using Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest (DHCA) technique was performed for the first time at the Andhra Heart and Brain Institute (AHBI) recently.

AHBI chief cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Dilip Kumar Ratti on Wednesday said, “Goguli Kumar (21) of Bihar, a daily wager, met with an accident while working near Gannavaram. A nail penetrated his neck and cut a major vessel of the heart. It resulted in massive blood clots in the heart. Kumar’s father brought him here and the surgery was performed successfully.”
On the DHCA technique, Dr Dilip Kumar said, “The brain, liver, solitary kidney and other vital organs of the patient were well protected during the surgery by a special bypass after reducing the body temperature to 15 degree Celsius. The blood circulation was completely arrested in the body using the cardiopulmonary bypass machine. During this period, his breathing and heartbeat were also stopped completely and the brain activity was minimised. The surgery took more than eight hours.”
Cardiologist J Srimannarayana, cardiac anesthesiologists Ramesh and Sudhakar were a part of the team that performed the surgery. “Kumar is recuperating and can resume activities soon,” the doctor said.
