Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has become the first in south India to perform a unique surgery to salvage a limb with multiple deformities using the advanced Taylor Spatial Frame. A team of orthopaedic surgeons led by Dr Srinivas Kasha performed the surgery on a 55-year-old farmer Venkatanarayana.

The patient was involved in a road accident in 2013 and sustained complex fractures in his right leg. A deep wound left the bone exposed. Since then he was operated multiple times but the bone refused to unite. In due course of time, he developed deformities in the leg. The advanced procedure has enabled the patient to walk on his own and faster than usual.

The Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) is an external fixator used by podiatric and orthopedic surgeons to treat complex fractures and bone deformities. The spatial frame is a hexapod device based on a Stewart platform and consists of two or more aluminum or carbon fibre rings connected by six struts. Each strut can be independently lengthened or shortened to achieve the desired result, i.e.

compression at the fracture site, lengthening, etc. Connected to a bone by wires or half pins, the attached bone can be manipulated in six axes. Commenting on the success of the surgery, Dr Srinivas Kasha, Orthopaedic Surgeon, KIMS Hospital, said, “It is a proud moment for us to have achieved a breakthrough in salvaging a limb with multiple fractures and deformities. TSF is a huge asset to medical science that will enable orthopaedic surgeons deal with the most complex situations.”
