Guntur: The Agriculture Department has taken up the task of collecting 34,000 soil samples by the end of May 2015 in Guntur district.Speaking at a review meeting with the technical personnel at Sattenapalli on Friday, Joint Director V Sridhar said 1.26 lakh Soil Health Cards would be distributed to the farmers by the end of May. The soil testing exercise was aimed at studying soil health of fields in the district. As part of the exercise, 30-45 soil samples from every village were being collected.

The study would enable Agriculture officials to advise the farmers correctly on the soil health and the crop that was suitable for the soil condition. This would help the farmer to scientifically grow crops and thereby improve yield and crop production. The Department of Agriculture would take the help of DWMA and the MGNREGA work force for the collection of soil samples. Sridhar said that in the next Kharif season, a demonstration farm in 10,000 acres would be raised at Sattenapalli with the technical and technological assistance of Japan.
