AB Venkateswara Rao Commissioner of Police AB Venkateswara Rao feels that the public can expect better law and order and smooth flow of traffic in the capital city only if they cooperate with the police. In an exclusive interview to the CityTAB, the Commissioner reveals his views on people-friendly policing system

Excerpts from the interview of City Police Commissioner AB Venkateswara Rao

Sir is the existing police force capable enough to handle the State capital?

Proposals were sent to the government for additional forces and specialised wings to suit the needs of capital. The government will take a decision after earmarking the capital purview.

What is your message to the public to prevent thefts during summer as most people go on a holiday?

More than 30 officials have been deputed to several areas of the city to prevent thefts. More than 35 per cent of the city is covered and we are educating people of different colonies to prevent thefts. We are appealing to the people to not keep valuables in the house in their absence. People should take their own precautions before leaving their house to prevent burglaries. In addition, there will night patrolling by the police.

What is the current critical problem in the city?

Handling traffic is a problem now as there is lack of infrastructure. We are only able to achieve 20 per cent of the results for a smooth flow of traffic. Traffic culture should be developed among people and they must be ready to change themselves to suit the capital city requirements by honouring the traffic rules.

Are you going to implement new rules to suit the needs of state capital?

Definitely we have to rewrite the rules as per the requirements. As the city is witnessing development after several years it is time to change as per the requirements of the growing city.

What steps have been taken for effective policing in the city?

We have started providing policing at doorstep. By dialing 100, people can get the services of the police at their doorstep. The police are filing FIRs at residences for the convenience of the public. People should come forward to redress their grievances by filing their complaints.

How is the law and order situation in the city?

We are capable of maintaining law and order effectively in the city.
