Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the country's most-respected politicians, was conferred Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour on Friday. The leader, who has been ailing for the last few years, received the award at his Delhi home from President Pranab Mukherjee. A battery of political leaders — including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP veteran LK Advani, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, senior cabinet ministers and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh — were present on the occasion.

"Atal-ji gave his life to bharat bhakti. Today he was honoured with Bharat Ratna. He is an inspiration for so many Indians like me," PM Modi later said.Mr Vajpayee, 90, was the country's first non-Congress Prime Minister who served a full five-year term - from 1998 to 2004. Among his boldest initiatives was the historic bus journey to Lahore in 1999 when he signed the landmark Lahore Declaration with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, with both sides pledging to push for peace and security.

India's second nuclear test at Pokhran, in May 1998, also took place during his tenure. In 2013, when the UPA government announced the Bharat Ratna for former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and scientist CNR Rao, the BJP had criticised the Congress for ignoring Mr Vajpayee's contribution to the nation.A three-time prime minister, Mr Vajpayee is considered the gold standard of leadership in the BJP. Last year, the party had celebrated his birthday - December 25 - as the Good Governance Day. The announcement of his award came a day before -- on December 24.

The Bharat Ratna announced for noted educationist and freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya will be given posthumously to his family members on March 30 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. An educationist with a vision, Malviya was behind the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University and remembered for his stellar role in the Independence movement.

The recommendation for the Bharat Ratna is made by the Prime Minister to the President. Since its inception, 43 people -- including former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bhadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi -- have received the prestigious award.
