The State government’s flagship programme, Mission Kakatiya, which aims to restore the glory of lakes in and around the city, is being taken up on a war-footing. A trial run of the weed harvesters that will be used for clearing out the hyacinth on lakes was conducted at Chinnarayuni Cheruvu at Alwal on Tuesday. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner Somesh Kumar were overseeing the run.
“The main aim of the programme is to beautify the lakes and to curb encroachments for the convenience of the citizens. The State government plans to save 169 lakes in the city. Of these, 156 lakes have been surveyed and boundaries have been fixed for the safety of the lakes and surroundings,” said T Harish Rao. “The government is endeavouring to beautify the lakes and attract tourists. The GHMC has allotted a budget of Rs 100 crore for the same purpose.
Modern equipment like weed harvesters are being used for cleaning the lakes,” said Naini Narsimha Reddy. Civic body chief Somesh Kumar stated that 36 lakes would be taken up in the first phase. It was mentioned that the Krishna water third phase would be completed in the next three months. Malkajgiri MLA Kanaka Reddy, GHMC chief engineers R Dhan Singh and Suresh Kumar, Zonal Commissioner Hari Chandana and other officials were present at the trial run.
