City now offers a career in bartending
For many youngsters, bartending is just serving liquor to customers by standing behind the counter in a bar or a restaurant. Very few are aware of the fact that it is an art to serve some lip smacking and wonderful beverages and one can pursue a lucrative career in bartending, if they are properly trained. Shangrila, a bartending school, has come up in the city for those who want to pursue a career in the field.

Very few are aware of the fact that it is an art to serve some lip smacking and wonderful beverages and one can pursue a lucrative career in bartending, if they are properly trained. Shangrila, a bartending school, has come up in the city for those who want to pursue a career in the field.
The school is a joint venture of Vikram Damera, a professional bartender who worked for six years in Dubai, Maldives and other places, and his friends V Ravi Kumar, G Naresh and his wife Sintha Karthika. Theirs is a courageous venture in a city like Vijayawada, which is slowly getting adapted to the cosmopolitan culture. Many hotel management students have evinced interest in doing a course in bartending at the school after realising its career prospects. The school located in a posh area in the city has two separate rooms for students to practice flaring.
There is also a bar counter with all the paraphernalia to give practical training to students in bartending. The duration of the complete course is four months. There are also courses of one month and two months duration. For fun-loving youngsters who want to try their hand at various things, the school is offering a 10-day hobby course in bartending.
“There is a misconception among majority of people in the country that bartending is not a dignified job. But in Western countries, a bartender is a highly recognised professional. A bar tender is generally paid $1,000 per month besides free food and accommodation. We set up Shangrila with an aim to encourage youngsters of the city to pursue bartending as a career. We sent a few students to Maldives recently to work as bar assistants there.”
He further said, “Bartending is not an easy job. One must have a strong passion to excel in the career. As everything is backed by a scientific reason, bartending also requires a little knowledge of science to churn up drinks of great taste and flavour. For students who want to pursue higher studies abroad by doing part-time job, bartending is a good option. There is no gender bias in bartending. About 30 per cent of bartenders in the West are women.”
