The full tank level (FTL) is 781 metres high and its perimeter is 781 metres. The lake has reduced in size due to the coming up of unauthorised houses and apartments in shikam lands abutting the lake bed and its buffer zone.

Illegal buildings and appartments have come up in Shikam lands

The lake is 13 km away from the Secunderabad Railway Station and 20 km away from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. It is near National Highway 9, which goes towards Mumbai. Prominent localities nearby are Aditya Nagar, Samatha Nagar, Sreenivasa Nagar, Laxmi Gayatri Duplex Houses, etc. The Metro Rail work is going on in full swing. The nearest MMTS railway stations are at Hitec City and Borabanda.

History

According to locals the lake has been in existence since the Nizam era, and it was located in a low lying area near Ambir Chruvu (Pragathinagar Lake). Rain water that used to stagnate here was favourable for the cultivation and fishing activity. Since the lake was in a low lying area surrounded by fertile lands it was named as Kindi Kunta.

Problems

G Balaswamy, member of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) said, “The lake is subject to rampant encroachments. Illegal sanctions were accorded in shikam lands for construction of apartments by the previous governments. More than Rs 100 crore worth shikam lands abutting the lakes were encroached upon. The 8.17 acres lake is now reduced to below 4 acres.

The FTL boundaries were broken and an unauthorised road was laid. The entire lake has now turned into a cesspool. If the present government allows these things to continue, the lake is likely to vanish in the due course of time.” Balaswamy appealed to the Telangana government to take immediate action and release funds to save the historic lakes.
