The new Chief Election Commissioner, S Nasim Zaidi, on Sunday said the EC would soon devise a long-term strategic plan aimed at strengthening the institution, making the election operation more efficient and raising voter awareness.

Speaking to media persons soon after taking charge as CEC, Zaidi said the EC would focus on voter-centric activities from enrollment to enable them with e-services. "EC's strategic plan for 10-15 years shall be based on principles of independence, transparency, professionalism, inclusiveness and measurable outputs," he stated.

Stating that he visualized ECI as a more vibrant, transparent and accountable organization that is receptive to new ideas and best practices, the former bureaucrat said the commission would formulate its guiding principles based on good governance. Zaidi tenure as CEC ends in July 2017. The government is yet to fill up the two vacancies created in the three-member poll panel following the retirement of V S Sampath in January and now HS Brahma.
