Hyderabad: Thick smog appears to be clouding over the sports fraternity in Andhra Pradesh, the ‘elections’ to the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association (APOA), notwithstanding.Although, results to the first panel in the residual State were announced in Hyderabad on Sunday, the open revolt by a parallel panel seems to be gathering storm.
It is threatening to snowball into a major, albeit avoidable, controversy. Ironically, the two bigwigs who are at loggerheads, wittingly or otherwise, are influential leaders from the ruling Telugu Desam Party-Rajya Sabha member C M Ramesh and Guntur Lok Sabha member Galla Jayadev! To spice it up all, the other protagonist in the soap opera includes K E Prabhakar, which all makes for a riveting TDP showdown.
According to a Guntur-based camp owing allegiance to Jayadev, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has released orders recognizing the election of the Jayadev panel at the executive committee in Tirupati on April 4. Consequently, K E Prabhakar was ‘elected’ as the Chairman. However, undaunted and perhaps oblivious of the dissent from within, the Ramesh panel celebrated their ‘election’, in the presence of Lagadapati Rajagopal, the last president of the undivided Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association.
As things stand, it seems like it will develop into an Olympian battle as neither of the warring factions is showing signs of either backing out or going in for any consensus. Both parties claim to have the backing of a “majority support that is overwhelmingly focused on giving shape to the sports vision of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu”. To be fair to him, it hardly matters which way the verdict will go because at the end of the day, the APOA will be in the custody of the Telugu Desam Party.
