That water colours are a capricious medium is a foregone conclusion and that is the reason why several artists forsake it, but not S K Sirajuddin. The challenge of playing with water colours has never dissuaded Sirajuddin for 25 years and he still enjoys painting. Mastery on wet on wet and wash techniques is something that he could master over the years is evident in the lotus pond series that he has done by depicting women in their different moods.

The tilted neck and the questioning brow of the beautiful lady speaks a thousand words, the language of emotion through the eyes and half open lips convey a hundred meanings. In the artist’s words, “Every time I paint women I get new meanings. Observation of women helps me in translating their emotions on canvas.” Doesn’t he get tired of painting women for more than 15 years we ask, to which he says, “I experiment each time and the women never disappoint me.

It is a challenge each time I try my hand and the water colours too pose questions. This twin challenge eggs me on.” Exploring feminine beauty through the vibrant palette that he handles conveys the myriad moods of women, the transparent tones give meanings to their feelings. The bright blues, soft ochres narrate stories of women and their tribulations. The challenge that water colours throw at the face of an artist is what makes the medium challenging.

They disobey and defy what one wants, it is only after several years of practice that one manages to get what one intends and Sirajuddin has been able to hold fort. The women at times smile, stand stately and entice one. He manages to get these emoting with consummate ease. The use of flowers and leaves blend beautifully with the women. The pinks, mauve and greens give that subtle substance that is needed for feminine feelings. Very few male artists capture the sensitive side of women but then Sirajuddin has been in constant touch with women through the brush for years. Want to soak in the emotions head to the Iconart Gallery. The show is on till May 7.
