Rice CUT TO CHILDREN BELOW 5 YEARS

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Telangana government which had failed to initiate steps to prevent suicides of farmers in the State was now denying rice to children below five years of age.Uttam said the Congress had demanded that the government withdraw the decision. He said it was unfortunate that the government refused to accept the reality that from April 1, ration dealers had stopped supplying 6 kgs of rice to all those who were below five years of age. He said the TPCC leaders would work out an action plan to confront the government on the issue soon after their return to Hyderabad.

The TTDP president L Ramana said they had drawn the attention of party president N Chandrababu Naidu towards the issue and that they were also ascertaining the details from the civil supplies department and rations shop dealers and would launch an agitation if the government did not rescind the oral instructions. Speaking to the media at BJLP office on Monday, BJP MLA Dr K Laxman said he would take up the issue with the Civil Supplies Minister.

The very fact that the Minister stated that they were contemplating to withdraw supply of 6 kg rice to children in the age group of 0-3 on the grounds that they did not consume that much quantity of rice was a measure which was condemnable.Speaking to The Hans India, the CPI State Secretary Chada Venkat Reddy said the party had already taken serious note of the issue and the cadre had been taking the government officials to task in district MRO office. “We shall be officially giving a call to demonstrate at revenue office in a day or two,” he said.

The CPI (M) State secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram said they would soon launch an agitation over the issue. He said till Sunday evening they were busy with the party congress held in Visakhapatnam. “We will chalk out an action plan after discussion within the party this week,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Greater Hyderabad Residents Forum (GHRF) has strongly condemned the government decision to deny ‘ration’ for children below the age of 5 years. It demanded the government to withdraw the decision, which affected thousands of poor families in the city. Forum general secretary J Kumara Swamy said the government was making a mess of its promises and if it did not withdraw the decision, the forum would mobilise public opinion against the government’s decision.
