Srinagar: A flood alert has been sounded in Srinagar after rains caused water levels of the River Jhelum to rise late on Monday.

The state irrigation and flood control department has issued the flood warning after water levels breached the danger mark at two places in South and Central Kashmir.

The department has asked people living on the banks of the river and in other low lying areas of south and central Kashmir to be alert.

Chief Engineer Mir Javed Jaffar was quoted, as saying that the water level at Sangam in South Kashmir had crossed 21 feet last evening, while the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar was at a little over 19 feet.

Heavy rainfall and snowfall is also being reported from Kargil in the Ladakh Division.
