It’s heartening to see that around 40,000 farmers, who were instrumental in managing the multi-business conglomerate ITC Bhadrachalam Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division (PSPD)’s farm forestry plantations as per Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, get their due recognition. Recognising the efforts of the farmers, the ITC’s Bhadracahalm unit officials on Tuesday felicitated them.

Bhadrachalam (Khammam): It’s heartening to see that around 40,000 farmers, who were instrumental in managing the multi-business conglomerate ITC Bhadrachalam Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division (PSPD)’s farm forestry plantations as per Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, get their due recognition. Recognising the efforts of the farmers, the ITC’s Bhadracahalm unit officials on Tuesday felicitated them.

The company also disbursed cheques worth around Rs 14.1 lakh to farmers. As a token of appreciation to the farmers’ support in its journey towards ‘Responsible Forestry’, the ITC paid Rs 50 per tonne to the beneficiary farmers, who strictly adhered to the norms of the FSC. It may be noted here that the FSC certification provides a unique competitive edge to the ITC's paperboards in an increasingly environment-conscious world.

The FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation, which ensures that forests and plantations are managed in a responsible manner and in accordance with internationally recognized standards. ITC, being India’s first company to be invited to be a member of the WWF's Global Forest and Trade Network (WWF GFTN), has ensured certification of more than 22,000 hectares of plantation raised under farm forestry.

It may be mentioned here that ITC's large-scale social forestry project has been the first of its kind in the country and was registered under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project. The benefits of the social forestry project activity will be passed on to the tribals after recovering the expenses incurred for the CDM project.
