Visakhapatnam: The Bharatiya Janata Party secretary P Muralidhar Rao has said Andhra Pradesh can still hope of getting special status. The BJP had promised special category status to the State. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday along with local MP K Haribabu and MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju, Muralidhar Rao put a spin on the Union Minister’s statement in Parliament. The statement did not mean that the Centre had not intended to accord special status to the State.

“We have development agenda on our hands and intended to make the party biggest in the world. How can we ignore the interests of the states after giving an assurance,’’ he said, while answering a volley of questions on the issue. He denied that the Centre was dragging its feet on the issue of according special status to the State only to discredit the TDP When asked why the Centre had not granted funds for Polavaram project, he said a time frame would be set for completion of the project.

Most of the major projects would be completed by 2019 before next general elections. Regarding membership drive, he said around 17 crore people voted for the party in the last year general elections and the leadership had decided to enroll 10 crore as members by end of this month.
