In a bid to add some charm to its slow-selling Rexton W, SsangYong has introduced a new top-of-the-line ELX variant on the SUV in the UK with a host of new features and upgrades, priced at 27,995 Pounds (Rs. 27.11 lakhs). For the extra money that buyers pay for, the SUV comes loaded with new 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, new LED DRLs, front parking sensors and a flashy new candy blue metallic paint on offer.

On the inside, the new SsangYong Rexton ELX variant has been updated with beige/grey leather interiors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, satellite navigation and an updated instrument console. Under the hood, the 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine does duty and is tuned to produce 155 HP and 360 Nm of torque, paired to an automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels via the 4×4 system.

SsangYong has also extended its 5 years limitless kilometres warranty on the new ELX trim. That said, the Rexton like in India is a slow seller in the UK as well and the new premium variant has been introduced to add some excitement to the sales. With much lighter and more powerful options on offer, the SsangYong offering does not feel as a compelling buy like the Nissan X-Trail or the Kia Sorento in the segment. Domestically, the Rexton manages to do double digit sales every month in India as opposed to the Toyota Fortuner’s 1400 units per month average in the same space.

The only SsangYong on sale in the country, the Rexton is currently available in three variants and we don’t think the Korean manufacturer will introduce this variant in India anytime soon. Mahindra though could bring in the recently launched Tivoli compact SUV to the country to take on the Renault Duster, Hyundai ix25, Maruti Across and the likes in addition to its own set of upcoming sub 4-metre offerings in the segment.
