The city’s skyline is already changing with many multi-storeyed buildings, couple of flyovers and widened roads in the pipeline in the capital area. The metro rail project is an added feature which is going to give a facelift to the city in the next three to four years.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief E Sreedharan had already submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project. The report mentions that the Rs 5,440.27 crore project will have two corridors, one from the Pundit Nehru Bus Station to Penamaluru covering the busy Mahatma Gandhi (Bandar) Road and the other from the bus station to Nidamanuru covering Karl Marx (Eluru) Road.
Though it was initially proposed to have the first corridor from Kanuru, the officials have extended it to Penamaluru keeping in view the number of visitors from that area. However, the second corridor remains the same covering a distance of 13.27 km in the first phase.
Both corridors would have around 26 stations for the benefit of the commuters. According to the DPR, the metro rail project will mostly use the existing two roads but will have to acquire government and private lands for the stations on both sides. The project is projected to be ready for operation by 2019 with a travelling population of 40 lakh per day.
The second phase will see the extension of the metro rail to Gannavaram covering the airport on the second corridor. This will link the bus station and the railway station with the airport passing through the Chennai-Kolkata national highway. However it is learned that the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his desire to have the Eluru Road corridor extended upto Gannavaram in the first phase as it will be an added advantage to the airport.
The second phase will also see two more new corridors – one from Bus station to Gollapudi towards Hyderabad and the other from Bus station to Thulluru, the capital village across Krishna River. The work on the second phase will begin only after 2019 by which time it is expected that the State will build a couple of buildings for the core capital.
