Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Monday directed the Telangana government to hold elections for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) by December 15. The court asked the government to complete the delimitation of wards and reservation process by October 31. The government argued that Greater Hyderabad is bigger than Singapore and hence it needs time to conduct the polls.

The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar, however, observed that since the civic body is already under the rule of special officer, the elections cannot be delayed further. It may be mentioned here that the KCR government was dilly-dallying to conduct of elections on one pretext or the other and had been repeatedly seeking time from the judiciary whenever the case up for hearing.

As a matter of fact one of the reasons for postponement of the elections was the delimitation of wards from 150- to 200 and also fix the number of reserved wards. However, the High Court was irked by the plea of the government counsel for demanding postponement of the polls and even at one stage warned the government that if the State Election Commission fails to conduct the polls at the earliest, then the court would be compelled to intervene and approach the Central Election Commission to complete the elections process.

Even on Monday, the counsel for the government sought time and the court quipped that the GHMC was already being administered by the Special Officer. Asserting that 180 days fore completing the delimitation work of the wards and another 45 days for completing the election process, the court directed that the GHMC election should be completed by December 16.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed the High Court judgment directing the State Government to conduct GHMC elections before December 16. "We appeal the State Government to complete the delimitation of wards and reservation of wards scientifically and see that the elections are held in time and put an end to Special Officer rule," BJP floor leader Dr K Lakshman said. He expressed confidence of BJP winning the next GHMC polls.
