Padayatra to focus on failures of TRS govt

Hyderabad: The AICC president- in-the-making, Rahul Gandhi, who took up the cause of farmers with his tours in Punjab and Maharashtra, is all set to take Telangana by storm. Rahul Gandhi, who recently adopted an aggressive stance against the Centre and non-Congress governments in states, will undertake a two-day tour of Telangana this month with focus on farmers' suicides. The re-oriented Rahul Gandhi is all-out efforts to create a new identity for himself among the people.

According to party insiders, about 20,000 party activists from 119 Assembly constituencies will participate in the padayatra. The Congress vice-president, who is likely to visit Telangana on May 10, will not be addressing any public meetings during the visit. “We may select about 200 cadres from each assembly constituency for the padyatra. The people will come voluntarily," said a Congress leader who is closely associated with planning of the padayatra.

The cadres, who will take part in the walk, will be called Telugu Rytu Padayatra volunteers. They will sway party flags along the yatra route. Rahul has given clear instructions to the TS-Congress leaders to ensure that that those who attend his meetings are genuine farmers and not party activists in the garb of farmers. Rahul has also made it clear that the leaders should not make a ‘hungama’ of his visit. He is likely to travel by train, bus or by car. Earlier, he used a helicopter.

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee is leaving no stone unturned to make the padayatra a grand success as it feels that it could be a major step to resurrect the party in Telangana. “TPCC is chalking out the programme in such a way that Rahul Gandhi would spend a night in tribal hamlet most probably in Adilabad district,” said a leader.

Though some leaders wanted Rahul to stay in Medak or Warangal, Rahul appears to be more inclined to stay in Adilabad tribal hamlet since it happens to be the most backward district and the significant number of farmers’ suicides had taken place there. It is learnt that Rahul would launch his yatra from Adilabad and en-route to Hyderabad would address wayside meetings at Warangal and Medak.
