When it comes to collection of property tax, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation gets hyper active, so much so that officials from all departments were put on the job last month but when it comes to updating the information on its website, the corporation deems it unnecessary. This is what one can infer.

Citizens who paid the property tax are angry as the website does not show that their property tax has been paid. Raghuveeran, a resident of Central Excise Colony said, “I tried calling the call centre but got vague answers. I have given up looking at the website.” Another irate resident of Warasiguda said that the GHMC talks about e-libraries and e-office but it cannot update simple property tax details.

Ripunjai, team leader, GHMC call centre when contacted said that it takes two to three days for updation and the staff has been working overtime to complete the process. However, citizens have been complaining that it takes more than 10 days and in most cases the website throws out old information of past years.

The five per cent rebate scheme for house earners to pay their property tax early ended on April 30 but the transactions are going on. On Monday there were 2200 property tax transactions and there are just four persons allotted. An employee on condition of anonymity said that they were understaffed and it is hitting the updation work.

Ravinder, a member of United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (UFRWAS), Alwal says, “About 2.7 lakh property tax payers took the early- bird offer and the GHMC netted Rs 109.55 crore in the month of April. Isn’t it the duty of the corporation to provide facilities at least update the website?”

The GHMC call centre receives close to 1,000 calls a day but there are just 15 employees at the Banjara Hills call centre. An employee said that one of the problems is when people pay online, due to net dropping too there are misses. The Hans India had reported in the past that due to shortage of staff, 50 per cent of the calls have to be reopened. Laxmibai, a retired lecturer said, “People want to see that their account is updated and it gives them satisfaction when the website shows that their property tax payments are up to date.”
