Adilabad: The paintings and toys made by artists in Nirmal town are famous across the country. Adding to it, these toys have great demand even in foreign countries. The skilful artists can give shape to any art form, including those from the epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Of late restrictions imposed by the Forest Department on the ‘Poniki’ wood used for preparing toys have severely affected the livelihood of talented artists.

They are facing lot of hardship in procuring the restricted wood and are being forced to remain idle because of its non-availability. Adding to their woes, the investments and production cost of toys have also gone up. Nirmal artists want the department to directly supply wood to them.

Enchanting Nirmal toys

The wood and other products required for their work are available only in Adilabad forests. The artists want the department to grow more such plants for their benefit. These artists prepare natural colours for using both in paintings and toys. Because of the high cost of production, they point out, the returns are not remunerative.

The financial status of Nirmal Nakasi Sangham, which used to earn profits in the past, has taken a beating because of the high production cost. Artists, who are members of the Sangham, have appealed to the State government to supply the raw material required for both paintings and toys at subsidised rates. They want the administration not to impose any levies on the famous Nirmal toys. To provide some relief to artists the government should find some quick solutions to their problems.
