While ham radio to most people may sound something that is not relevant to the present, as many as 50 people in the city have undergone ham radio training. At a programme held at the Regional Science Centre at Bhavanipuram on Sunday, certificates were given away to these people, who will appear for an exam in July to get their ham radio licences.

Speaking on the occasion, Vijayawada Ham Radio Academy director Arja Ramesh Babu said, “The amateur radio is relevant even in the cyber era and is immensely useful while undertaking rescue and relief operations during major natural disasters.”

Former High Court advocate K Ramesh, who got an international recognition for his commendable services as an amateur radio operator during the recent earthquake in Nepal, interacted with the trainees on the occasion. He shared his experiences as an amateur radio operator in establishing vital communication links in disaster-hit areas.

He also exhorted students undergo ham radio training to extend a helping hand to the affected people during natural calamities. Later, Ramesh was felicitated by Chandana group chairman Chandana Kedareswar who is also an amateur radio operator.
